Lava Lamps: Modern Floor Lamps Or Unsightly Fixtures?

The lava lamp, filled with its smelly gunk, should have remained in the 1960s. It is back in fashion today, reminding me how the little girl I was disappointed her mother by buying one against her wishes.

Most styles fall out of favor but some come back in fashion over the years, and it is not always for the best. The modern wonder that is the lava lamp, for instance, is one sixties fixture that I would have preferred remained confined to that decade.

I thought they were the greatest thing ever when I was a kid: several of my friends had one of those floor lamps at home, and so did my older sister in her apartment. As there was no spare outlet in my bedroom, my mother refused to get me one as I had asked for my birthday and Christmas. She didn?t like the way they look so having one in another part of our home was not an option either.

I had always been a well behaved child and listened to my parents, yet my obsession with lava lamps brought out the worst in me: I just had to have one. I managed to save the money I had earned babysitting to go shopping with a girlfriend: a local store was running a sale on lava lamps, so I could not resist the temptation. I thought it would give a really great glow from my closet, so I took my newly acquired lamp to my room thinking that my mom would never find out.

She had however been right about there not being a spare socket in my room: I had to take an extension cord from the storage area and run it behind the dresser in order to get into the closet. I placed the lamp on top of the box that it came with and switched it on. It turned out that the lamp had been on clearance due to its particularly dreadful color, yet I was so excited by my purchase that I really enjoyed watching the brownish orange blobs moving about. Soon afterwards my mother called me down for dinner. We heard a sudden crash upstairs while we were eating. My cat came running down the stairs all puffed up, and flattened to hide under the sofa: she had knocked my new lamp over and scared herself silly in the process.

My mother was wondering were the liquid on the floor came from before she saw the box. The only thing she said was asking me to clean up the mess. This was no easy process: to this day I do not know what kind of liquid goes into lava lamps, but I can tell you that it is slimy and smelly. The blobs were so slippery that they were nearly impossible to pick up, and it took me two hours to have the room cleaned. The smell of the liquid, however, was not going away and I could not sleep in my bedroom that night. I went to tell my mom how sorry I was. This was the only time that she ever said I had disappointed her.

Whenever I see lava lamps in stores today I struggle to remember why I was so obsessed with them, and I can still see my mother?s disappointed face as she told me to clean up the mess.

Store Fixtures

As the retail store industry has developed, visual merchandising and product display has become a major concern of business owners. As a result, store fixtures of every variety have been produced to maximize the exposure of products on the sales floor. Today, retail stores carry everything from clothes, to toys, electronics, to kitchen accessories. It is important for a sales manager to have the tools necessary for displaying these varieties of items in the most effective way. Some of the many store fixtures commonly used today are gridwall fixtures, clothing store fixtures (such as hangers, racks, and mannequins), display cases, shopping bags, jewelry displays, slatwall fixtures, and good old fashioned shelves. Gridwall and slatwall fixtures serve a similar purpose by providing display space along the walls of a retail store. Slatwalls use grooves and pieces of hardware, while gridwalls have a grid system that can be interlocked with different display hardware. Hooks, shelves, baskets, and literature holders are just a few of the many accessories that can be added to these displays to produce a more vertical and less space consuming display. Hangers are a major part of clothing display. There are so many types of hangers and hanger accessories that can accommodate any retail clothing environment. It is important to not only match the store environment with clothing hangers, but also to choose the right hangers for the style and preservation of the clothes for sale. Some of the materials hangers are produced from today are wood, metal, plastic, and fiberglass. Mannequins are also a very important player in clothing display. Ranging from full-length life-size portrayals to torsos and hanging forms, they bring the clothes to life by giving them a human shape and helping the customer imagine their true appearance. Display cases are important for both display and security of precious products. They can be framed with several different metals or wood and can be full vision, half vision, open cases, register stands, countertop, oaken, pedestal, portable, or custom. Within these varieties of displays are also a variety of display options for bracelets, rings, chains, watches, or necklaces, and these come in materials such as metal, wood, velvet, or acrylic. Though many do not think of shopping bags as store fixtures, they are possibly one of the most important. Craft bags, tinted bags, shopping baskets, carts, and holiday bags are all used to make the shopping experience a little easier. Think of what shopping would be like without bags. Store fixtures give retail stores shape and personality organizing and displaying products in the most effective and enjoyable way possible. It is important to consider store fixtures of every product in a store. Although this may seem to get expensive, the profits they will produce and help they will bring to managers and employees will far outweigh the cost. Is Your Career Like My Bathroom Light Fixture

?This is a new one? you are thinking to yourself right now! Hear me out on this one, I think you will be amazed at how right I am! I made this comparison this morning and just had to share it with the world! You too could be living with a dim light in your daily routine, whether it be work, a relationship, your business, or any other host of activities, and you may not even be aware of it!

This morning I was getting the house ready for company stopping by and I noticed that one of my bathroom light bulbs was burned out. I have 2 fixtures with 3 light bulbs each, so 1 bulb being out is sort of hard to notice. But then when I screwed the new light bulb in, the room light up what seemed to be 100x brighter than it had been in some time! It occurred to me that the bulb hadn't just burned out this morning, rather, it had probably been out for some time. But through the daily routine and the bathroom being fairly well lit anyway, I just went on with my business and never stopped to analyze the situation. Literally, when I put the new bulb in, it was like seeing myself in the mirror for the first time; this new bulb (same wattage and everything else, mind you) was that helpful!

Where is the burned out bulb in your life? Are you in a job that you haven't liked for some time, but you are too caught up in the daily routine to change it? What about that relationship that you are no longer excited about? Or how about your business being just 'status quo' and doesn't really seem to be as bright and clear as it once was? There are literally hundreds of things that could qualify as burned out light bulbs in our lives, but with enough bulbs lit, we hardly noticed the ones that are burned out!

My challenge to you: this New Year, examine all of the light bulbs in your life and find which ones are no longer as bright as they once were. Granted, things like a job, a relationship, a business, are a lot harder to change than a actual light bulb, but make a commitment to yourself, along with a plan of action, and get those light bulbs changed!

Finding The Plumbing Fixture That Works In Your Home

There can be nothing more enjoyable than decorating your home. Whether it?s tackling the design of a new home, or revamping your existing home, choosing just the right accessories to complete the look of your home can be decidedly challenging and exciting. Nothing can do more for a room than a beautiful plumbing fixture. And finding that plumbing fixture can be a journey in and of itself.

To begin with it?s important to take the overall feel of your home into account. A shiny new plumbing fixture with contemporary lines or a sleek modern feel may look out of place in an older, more traditional home. Conversely, an antique plumbing fixture may not blend in a more contemporary home.

When in search for newer, more modern plumbing fixtures look to materials such as nickel and chrome. These plumbing fixtures are readily available in most home improvement stores today, making them a convenient purchase. Prices ranges are enormous. You can just as easily find over the top expensive plumbing fixtures as you can find those that are affordable.

Locating antique plumbing fixtures to fit the style of your older home can be a little more work but also quite a bit of fun. Start with antique stores, make the rounds of flea markets, estate sales, and even try your hand at ebay. You can find a treasure in the rough that can become a plumbing fixture showpiece in your home.

Even with antique plumbing fixtures, prices vary greatly. However, in many cases you can bargain with sellers to get a better deal.

Finding that perfect plumbing fixture can create a whole atmosphere in a room of your home. Whether it?s new or antique, the plumbing fixture that you choose must be one that you love no matter its origin.

Bathroom Plumbing Fixtures - It's All in Design

There is more to bathroom plumbing fixtures than meets the eye. Take for example the wide ranges in finishes - chrome, copper, gold, brass, nickel, and more; or the varieties in design - traditional to minimalist.

In the bathroom, consumers have access to a vast array of finishes and design options through manufacturers such as Sigma, Perrin & Rowe, Sussman, and Porcher. Take for example Sigma faucets and basins, which come in literally dozens of finishes. One particular finish, called "the living finish", oxidizes and changes with use, creating a dynamic yet rustic look. Other Sigma finishes include matte, gloss, and polished finishes in everything from chrome to gold.

Sigma, along with Perrin & Rowe, offers a wonderful selection of traditional faucets and basins that vary from traditional English style plumbing to a Greco-roman look in a vast array of available finishes.

For those seeking simplicity, Porcher, featured on FinestFixtures, has a line of products offering some of the latest in European minimalist design by leading designers such as Gae Aulenti (Monoblock Faucet) and Enzo Mari (Angular Ceramic Sinks). Minimalism involves stripping away the frivolous and unnecessary, leaving clean and simple lines, but without sacrificing luxury and style. Basins by Art Ceram and KWC faucets also offer bathroom and kitchen designs to those seeking simplicity - take for example the KWC faucet "Eve", which was featured in Time Magazine in October 2006.

Toilet manufacturers have made leaps and bounds in delivering products offering easier maintenance and greener more environmentally friendly designs. Toto and Porcher both offer lines of sleek dual flush toilets imported from Europe and Japan, which dramatically reduce water consumption without sacrificing functionality. Toto boasts the world's most expensive toilets, with seat options that include a remote warm water wash and dry feature for huge savings on your toilet roll consumption.

Grocery Store Fixtures Central to Store Marketing

When it comes to grocery shopping, everybody has their own way of doing things. Some make a list before hand, determined to turn on the tunnel vision and focus only on the family?s predetermined ?needs.? Others go up and down every aisle, sans a list, picking and choosing as they go. There are hundreds of strategies, but they all rely heavily on store layout to work. In an ever competitive age with super stores popping up everywhere, it?s essential that independent grocery store owners consider their store fixtures and layout as a critical component of their marketing strategy.

Grocery store fixtures and store layout are essentially the core of a grocer?s marketing. You can greet them at the door, have amazing service at the register, bag and even carry their groceries for them. But from the time they walk in, until they get to the register, they?re on their own. So it is important for grocers to put an extra effort into the design process to give their store that ?something? that makes shoppers connect, relate and return to that store.

Grocers need to take a step back, and really get into the mindset of their typical customer. Think about what times of the day are peak hours for your store. Consider what times of day people do their heavy shopping, as well as when they are more likely to stop in for just a few items. All of these details are important, because they tell you who your audience is and what matters to them. Armed with that information, a retailer has a lot of power and an opportunity to turn their store into a destination for target customers.

Grocery store layouts have always relied heavily on marketing. Nobody has to be told why bread and milk are typically found in the opposite back corners of the store. They?re the two items people are most likely to ?run in for.? So grocers have decided over the years that if you only want bread and milk, you?re going to have to walk past every other product in the store to get them. But that may not be the right approach, in this day and age where convenience stores are selling bread and milk as well.

Here are a few examples of how grocery store design can speak to target customers:

Move it on Up:

Everybody?s doing the ?back of the store? thing. But what if a retailer took the flip side approach, understanding that no matter where the bread and milk are, you?re eventually going to need to come in to do your heavy shopping? What if they moved a small milk cooler and a shelving unit to the front of the store, filled with some quick stop items? Chances are, they would become known as the convenient alternative, making them a favorite among shoppers for all grocery stops.

Show ?Em How It?s Done:

Add recipe card holders on fixtures throughout the grocery store. Stock them with free recipes cards that use a particular ingredient right there for shoppers to see. An even better option is to feature one to three recipes a week in a prominent area of the store. Have all of the ingredients necessary laid out there for purchase. It makes for a convenient buy for the customer and an easy multi-item sale for you!

Make them Comfortable:

Wouldn?t it be nice to walk into your local grocery store on a cold winter day and be served a pastry and a hot chocolate at the door? Or to come in on a hot summer afternoon and be greeted with a glass of lemonade? Shopping carts can be fitted with cup holders pretty affordably. What a unique and affordable way to show customers you appreciate their business! And being hospitable has its benefits. By offering your customers relief from the elements, you make them comfortable and slow them down a bit, so they?re more likely to spend more time at the store.

How to Choose the Perfect Lighting Fixtures for Your Living Areas

Lighting fixtures are so important to the overall ambiance of the room in which they are placed; moreover, the fixtures themselves are accessories to the d?cor, and should be chosen with that in mind. In fact, lighting choices are an integral part of ?finishing? a room?s d?cor. The goal, of course, should be to choose a lighting source that adequately illumines the room and melds into the surroundings as though it was custom made for the space. Just as the wrong earrings, belt, or handbag can make an outfit seem mismatched and unsightly, so to can the lighting choices ruin an otherwise well-accessorized home.

Living areas, in particular, are susceptible to flawed lighting choices. Usually the main part of the home in which most time is spent, living areas should be studied carefully prior to the addition of any ornamentation in the form of lighting fixtures. The d?cor of the room dictates the lighting sources to use, where to place them, and the finishes that should be sought.

To begin, examine the area?s inspiration. Is this a traditional area? Is it contemporary? Perhaps this room is reminiscent of a beach cottage. Regardless of the design, there are so many lighting options, that you are bound to find several that can be integrated into the room?s motif.

Perhaps this is a traditional area, with a formal living room and neutral base tones. This area, then, should be softly lit, preferably with recessed lighting that can diffuse a golden glow over the area. Accent these overhead lights with table lamps featuring scrolled, wrought iron or brushed bronze bases. The lamp shades can offer a coordinating hue; however, in this area, it is best to avoid bright white or any vivid color. Muted, earthy tones are the finest choice for shade color. Additionally, a smoother texture for the lamp shade will provide a clean and polished look; choose a wheat or natural colored linen or faux suede for visual depth and interest. This room must avoid the pleated, accordion style shade of yesteryear. Also well suited to this area are lighting fixtures that resemble antique pieces, such as lanterns and candles. Again, though, wrought iron and bronze are the ideal finishes.

A Victorian d?cor, on the other hand, calls for delicate crystal or glass for the base of table and accessory lamps. Overhead lighting can be best achieved with a chandelier of crystal, or a tiered-style suspended fixture with miniature, floral-accented shades. Tassels suspended from the shades are also a nice decorative element for this area. Floor lamps with arched stems and cut- or etched-glass shades are lovely in the Victorian room, particularly when placed to the side of a wing back chair or chaise lounge.

Perhaps your room is contemporary and modern. This space calls for simplistic fixtures?no ornate jewel tones and frou-frou add-ons. Industrial, silver and brushed nickel finishes on utilitarian pieces are best to keep the space clean and minimal. Lighting should be bright, but not harsh, so opt for pieces that make dramatic statements with a minimum of glare. Overhead lighting is best achieved with a close-to-ceiling fixture that features the least amount of ornamentation as possible. Floor lamps are better choices for this space than table lamps. Opt for floor lamps with slender bases and simple, unusual shades in grays, whites, or blacks. Once again, brushed silver and nickel are the ultimate finishes for this space, as they exude minimalism yet complete the room and relieve the sense of starkness and sparseness that can be problematic in the modern home.

Of course, there is a vast array of d?cor possibilities, and these are just a sampling. To choose the best possible lighting, survey the area?is it too large for one chandelier? Are recessed lights an option? How much light do you need to create and where in the room? Beyond this, remember: lighting, both in the way in which illumination is provided and in the fixtures themselves, can seamlessly pull together the d?cor or it can detract atrociously from the room?s design.

Bar Lighting Fixtures

Bar lighting fixtures give can give off either diffused lighting or focused lighting, depending upon the shade that is used. For this reason, the area of usage will determine the exact kind of shade that will suit the purpose. Bar lighting fixtures are also commonly used in bathrooms. Other areas of the house also merit the use of bar lights, but bathrooms are the most popular place of use for them.

Bar lights are a series of small light sources mounted on a metal bar. This bar is attached to the wall above your sink or counter top. These lights are very versatile and are usually dressed up with either upward- or downward-facing glass shades. This is done to focus the light from the lamp on to a particular surface if downward facing, and to bounce light off the ceiling if upward facing.

Some bar lighting fixtures incorporate more than one shade. This enables one bar lighting fixture to be used for a larger area like a long counter or a double sink. The shades can be chosen to match the bathroom tiles and accentuate the d?cor of the room. The shades for bar lighting fixtures are generally available in white, frosted, or translucent glass. The metal parts of such fixtures are generally made of shiny chrome, polished brass, nickel, or may even sport an antique finish.

Vanity globes are a variation of bar lights. These are round, white, glass globes that completely encase the light bulbs. A stylish and classy accessory, these vanity globes are generally used to add an element of style to a place that is often on public display. This kind of a light fixture gives off a strong, diffused light. Used above dressing tables it gives off the perfect kind of lighting for dressing. Globes look best over a narrow sink, a dressing table, or in a guest bathroom to impart a classy look.

Work Placements Become Permanent Fixture in UK

A "Happiness Index" survey made by City and Guilds reveals that more than 20 per cent of respondents have left or are considering leaving a job because they want a change in career.

City and Guilds in alliance with other organisations works to build a world in which all people and organisations can access the skills needed for economic and personal well being. They want to become a world-leading provider of qualifications and learning support for work and adult life and to provide more people with relevant skills to increase prosperity for individuals employers and nations. City and Guilds promotes excellence, engagement, integrity, innovation and fulfillment and is committed to taking vocational education to the next level by forging partnerships that deliver the skills and training required to truly develop a cutting edge workforce for economic prosperity.

The result of their survey has a big impact on the perception of the workers happiness in their jobs. The research was made on over 610 employees and over 600 human resources managers but if the results are extended to the British working population we end by having more than six million people unhappy about their actual job.

Besides the fact that City and Guilds is highlighting this problem, they are also offering a solution: work placements could prevent this situation by allowing employees and bosses to try out each other's "compatibility".

Vocational qualifications experts at City and Guilds advise that the results of their research only sustain the idea that allowing future employees to try out a career could provide them with a valuable and realistic insight into a profession, while employers would size them up without committing themselves. Companies are competing for talent in a jobseeker's market, but more than 30 per cent are still not taking advantage of the full benefits that work placements offer. What work placement actually offers is the joint between work experience organised through a school, a placement during a tertiary course commonly referred to as a "sandwich course", and internships or secondments.

The head of national policy development at City and Guilds, Ms Judith Norrington advises that "UK businesses need to consider work placements as a serious tool in enhancing recruitment and realise the commercial advantages that they can offer their business."

Some of the employers are becoming more receptive towards work placements and an increasing per cent of them see work placements as a good way of assessing potential staff or to be good part of their training and recruitment policy. The idea is that work placements should play a key role not only in career choices for students, but they can also benefit adults who are looking to return to the workplace or change occupation. More than a third of returners said that a placement would help them make an informed decision and more than 60 per cent said that they had continued working in the sector where they had taken their work placement.

Ms Norrington explained that "Work placements provide an ideal opportunity for employers to attract experienced adults or career changers into their industry. As the number of young people entering the labour force diminishes by 60,000 each year, employers will need to tap into a broader range of workers of all ages and experience."

Jobserve has an extensive database of jobs available for jobseekers.

A "Happiness Index" survey made by City and Guilds reveals that more than 20 per cent of respondents have left or are considering leaving a job because they want a change in career.

Store Fixture Criteria

Cost, quality, and service are the three standards that retailers regard in all parts of the industry. This is invariably true during the process of purchasing store fixtures and creating a retail display design. The priority of these three criteria shuffles depending on the individual, but it is the goal of most to find a balance. Retailers want something that is durable and made with quality, provides excellent display service, while at a reasonable cost as well. To determine the best store fixtures that will fit these criteria for a particular store, retailers need to know what they are looking for.

Determining a store fixture according to shape, function, fit, finish, and fabrication will narrow the search dramatically and bring the purchaser much closer to meeting their criteria. The shape of a fixture describes one of six basic shapes, though it is not limited to these. Shelving, countertops, showcases, wall displays (such as slatwall displays), merchandisers, and garments racks are the most common of retail store fixtures. Usually the type of merchandise helps determine the necessary shapes. It is also important to consider the amount of products displayed by a single fixture compared to the cost of the fixture.

This brings us to function. Merchandise capacity will determine the amount of merchandise that can be displayed. If store fixtures are already at max capacity, chances are, the floor space is not totally utilized. It is extremely helpful to use larger fixtures where possible and display merchandise according to floor space rather than limited display fixtures. More efficient and functional displays will increase the number of items shown and have a direct influence on sales.

The fit of a fixture refers to the assembly, or movable parts. Units that need to move frequently must be durable and have a minimum number of moveable parts. The more pieces that separate or move, the less likely a fixture will last. However, for more stable store fixtures, smaller parts and accessories may bring a lot to the display arena. Slatwall or gridwall displays with customizable accessories are very professional and greatly enhance specific, valuable, or featured merchandise. Similarly, any fixtures with glass should stay. No manager or owner wants to be moving the glass showcase to the other side of the store once a month.

The finish and fabrication of store fixtures complete the ensemble by creating a visually coordinated sales floor. Customers see consistency as success, and making decisions like staying with wood finish or changing every thing to fit a new color scheme will keep your sales floor recognizable and appealing. It is better to get rid of an odd ball expensive fixture rather than keep it on amidst an entirely new floor design.

Keep these fixture qualities in mind and use them to create a narrowed list of desirables. This list can then be balanced according to budget, quality, and functional service, but don't be afraid to ask a few customers what they think. Not only will you often gain insightful information but most customers will get a kick out of helping in the store design process.

Torchieres are Elegant and Space Saving Light Fixtures

The torchiere is a lighting fixture that has gained much popularity over the last ten or so years, with its slim elegant design and availability in a wide range of prices, it's easy to see why. For those not familiar with the torchiere, they are a close relative of the floor lamp but with a few discernable differences. Torchieres are generally characterized by a very thin column that rises up from some sort of weighted base. Most stand around six-feet tall and have light diffusers or shades that force light upwards, as opposed to lamps which shine downwards. This is probably the key characteristic of the torchiere.

Torchieres are fairly versatile, as they can pretty much work in any room in your home. They are most widely used in living rooms and bedrooms but they don't look out of place in dining rooms and home offices either. The slim torchiere is ideal for so many rooms because of its space-saving design. With floor and table lamps, one needs to worry about the size of the base and the size of the lampshade. There are none of these worries with torchieres.

As mentioned in the opening paragraph, the torchiere is available in every price range. Stores ranging from your neighborhood Target or Wal-Mart to higher end retailers like Restoration Hardware all carry some form of the torchiere. You can spend as little as $20-$30 for a cheapie basic model or into the thousands for a torchiere made from finer materials with a more elaborate look.

In pretty much all cases, a torchiere provides more ambient light than a standard lamp, sometimes up to 20% more light. The reason for this is the upward facing shades mentioned in the first paragraph. Light will hit a standard height ceiling and be diffused over a greater area than light from a table or floor lamp, which is forced downwards and often blocked.

Lighting Fixtures

Lighting fixtures refer to a variety of bulb holders. Lamp fixtures are often accompanied by shades, enclosures or cases that hold the bulb in. A bulb, wiring and circuit are essential for light to emanate in the first place. A fixture’s role is considered minimal as far as the functioning of a bulb or its light rendering capacity is concerned. Lighting fixtures serve purely aesthetic functions.

The market offers lighting fixtures of infinite designs, types, shapes and sizes. Most stand out as creatively designed works of art in metal and glass to house bulbs. With lighting plans aspiring to create a mood and ambience, correct positioning of the bulb is extremely vital. While considering a lighting fixture, it is important to take into account that a particular bulb is right for a certain fixture.

For example, a halogen bulb should always be housed in an enclosed lighting fixture to avoid the dangerous consequences of a burst halogen bulb. The fixture has to be evaluated on various other parameters, like what type of task it is chosen for, what is the kind of light distribution can be expected from it(given its shades, shape, color, etc.), how does it effect the efficiency of the bulb and what kind of color distribution does it render. Hence, choosing a lighting fixture purely on aesthetic criteria is not a judicious decision.

Lighting fixtures also influence the efficiency of bulbs. It is always advisable to go for lighting fixtures with the highest energy efficiency ratings. While shopping for fixtures, one should ask about their efficiency. The efficiency rating of fixtures is published by the manufacturers and is available at the retail shops.

An inefficient fixture may absorb huge amounts of light, consequently reducing the amount of light distributed, or radiate the light to various cavities in the ceiling. The light efficiency of the fixtures can be maximized by regularly cleaning the dirt, and cobwebs from the shades and fixtures.

A lighting fixture should also coordinate and complement the look and style of the space. While choosing a chandelier, for example, the space it is meant for has to be borne in mind. A huge suspended fixture will look out of place in a small room. There are lighting fixtures for all kinds of lighting requirements. Lighting fixtures in resplendent designs and infinite sizes and ranges flood the market. An automatic or manual control facility increases the lifespan of the lamps, apart from enabling the easy layering of light. The age of individuals, the speed and precision demands of a task and the albedo of the surface are some of the other factors that determine people’s choice of a particular lighting fixture.
