Microsoft Great Plains Furniture & Fixtures implementation & customization highlights

Microsoft Great Plains, former Great Plains Software Dynamics / eEnterprise was introduced in 1993 as first Microsoft Windows and Macintosh based graphical accounting/ERP application for Mid-Size businesses.  Considering the history of furniture retailer and custom assembly lines they showed up on the market about five decades ago and they have automated their business operations with Unix-based businesses in the late 1960th and earlier 1970th.

You can find such furniture resale systems as Storis, which is Unidata based application, automating furniture retail outlets.  Lets consider the options.

  • General Ledger.  There is no need to immediate replacement of legacy retail stores automation software.  It is reliable and proved to work over years.  They usually sit in very reliable Unix hardware such as IBM AS/400 or RS6000.  You would need just import General Ledger transaction to the system, where you would have flexible and quick financial reporting.  In this case you need Unidata export and feed it into Great Plains General Ledger.  Use Great Plains Integration Manager or heterogeneous SQL queries.
  • Payroll.  Great Plains would be reasonably priced payroll solution if you process payroll inhouse.  If you have less then 500 employees then Great Plains Standard douse excellent job and software price would be around k$10.  You will have to pay annual maintenance program and receive Payroll taxes and federal magnetic media updates to keep you safe from the payroll taxation errors and miscalculation.  If you cross over 500 employees line Great Plains software price will be around k$30 and you could find cheaper solutions with unlimited number of employees look at Accpac.
  • eCommerce.  If you are replacing your legacy system, then you could build eCommerce upon Microsoft Great Plains Inventory Control (IV) and Sales Order Processing modules.  Looking into the future you should expect increasing portion of you business to come from eCommerce ordering.  Here you deploy eConnect and have your or contracting developers do the job.  If eConnect is too expensive you could appeal to experienced developers, who has set of custom stored procedures to work with SOP10100, SOP10200 and IV00100 tables
  • Commission Reporting.  In Furniture outlet shift manager commission is based on her/his employees-salespersons performance.  And it is usually tiered.  We saw very complex and proprietary formulas.  Our suggestion is to realize it in SQL Stored Procedure and then you could create Crystal Report with parameters to calculate and report commission amounts

Store Fixture Criteria

Cost, quality, and service are the three standards that retailers regard in all parts of the industry. This is invariably true during the process of purchasing store fixtures and creating a retail display design. The priority of these three criteria shuffles depending on the individual, but it is the goal of most to find a balance. Retailers want something that is durable and made with quality, provides excellent display service, while at a reasonable cost as well. To determine the best store fixtures that will fit these criteria for a particular store, retailers need to know what they are looking for.

Determining a store fixture according to shape, function, fit, finish, and fabrication will narrow the search dramatically and bring the purchaser much closer to meeting their criteria. The shape of a fixture describes one of six basic shapes, though it is not limited to these. Shelving, countertops, showcases, wall displays (such as slatwall displays), merchandisers, and garments racks are the most common of retail store fixtures. Usually the type of merchandise helps determine the necessary shapes. It is also important to consider the amount of products displayed by a single fixture compared to the cost of the fixture.

This brings us to function. Merchandise capacity will determine the amount of merchandise that can be displayed. If store fixtures are already at max capacity, chances are, the floor space is not totally utilized. It is extremely helpful to use larger fixtures where possible and display merchandise according to floor space rather than limited display fixtures. More efficient and functional displays will increase the number of items shown and have a direct influence on sales.

The fit of a fixture refers to the assembly, or movable parts. Units that need to move frequently must be durable and have a minimum number of moveable parts. The more pieces that separate or move, the less likely a fixture will last. However, for more stable store fixtures, smaller parts and accessories may bring a lot to the display arena. Slatwall or gridwall displays with customizable accessories are very professional and greatly enhance specific, valuable, or featured merchandise. Similarly, any fixtures with glass should stay. No manager or owner wants to be moving the glass showcase to the other side of the store once a month.

The finish and fabrication of store fixtures complete the ensemble by creating a visually coordinated sales floor. Customers see consistency as success, and making decisions like staying with wood finish or changing every thing to fit a new color scheme will keep your sales floor recognizable and appealing. It is better to get rid of an odd ball expensive fixture rather than keep it on amidst an entirely new floor design.

Keep these fixture qualities in mind and use them to create a narrowed list of desirables. This list can then be balanced according to budget, quality, and functional service, but don't be afraid to ask a few customers what they think. Not only will you often gain insightful information but most customers will get a kick out of helping in the store design process.

Lighting Fixtures – Beautiful and Stylish General Lighting

When decorating a room it takes several different types of lighting to truly complete the look. In the ideal room, general lighting, task lighting and accent lighting work in harmony to create an overall effect that is comfortable and engaging. For these reasons, serious thought needs to be given to the home lighting design process, especially when it comes to general lighting fixtures. While general lighting fixtures can be decorative and add an element of style to the room, it also needs to be practical and able to handle the majority of your general lighting issues.

General lighting is the ambient lighting that is used to illuminate an entire room. General lighting is normally switch operated and consists of lighting fixtures installed in common rooms such as entryways, bedrooms, and bathrooms.

While some lighting fixtures and other types of general lighting fixtures can be bland and virtually blend away into the surface of the ceiling, other lighting fixtures can make a bold statement or be selected to accent your décor beautifully.

There are many different styles of lighting fixtures to choose from including fixtures that are ideal for home decorating styles such as Mission, Traditional and Contemporary. You can choose from many different color schemes and patterns such as geometric shapes, floral patterns, and Tiffany styled lighting fixtures.

Changing your existing lighting fixtures is probably one of the easiest and least expensive ways that you can spruce up your home décor, and it doesn’t take a genius or a home improvement guru to get it done right. In fact, almost anyone can dramatically change the look of their interior space by changing its existing ceiling fixture, and it only takes a couple of steps.

Here’s how:

1.Shut off the power to the entire room where the fixture is located. If you’re not sure which breaker or breakers control the lighting fixture, turn off the power in the entire house to be on the safe side.

2.Remove the globe or diffuser, and the bulb(s). Remove the screws or the cap nut holding the canopy in place, and drop the fixture down. Disconnect the black and white wires. Check wires for cracks in the insulation.

3.Connect the black and white wires and the ground wire of the new fixture to the wiring in your ceiling, coil them up into the box, and push the canopy into place so the studs poke through. If the unit does not easily push up flush to the ceiling, drop it down and rearrange the wires. Secure the canopy by twisting cap nuts onto the studs.

4.Screw in the bulbs and attach the globe to the canopy. Restore power to the room.

See, changing a ceiling fixture is barely enough to break a sweat, and the effect created by your new ceiling fixture will be noticed right away. So, if you are looking for a way to inexpensively and easily spruce up your décor, perhaps you should add that special design element with new lighting fixtures.

Ceiling Fixtures For Your Bathroom And Decor

Our bathrooms are one of the most important rooms in our home. We spend a great deal of time in them preparing for our day, during the day for quick touch-ups and in the evening to wash away the day’s stress and tension. The lighting we choose for our bathrooms is essential for creating just the right atmosphere in this multi-tasking room.

When considering lighting options, think about the overall look and style of the bathroom in which you are installing the ceiling light fixtures. Whether it is a flush or semi-flush ceiling mount, it should compliment the décor of your bathroom and at the same time provide the proper lighting. For smaller bathrooms, consider light fixtures on a smaller scale. More spacious bathrooms can accommodate larger and more ornate fixtures. A smaller bathroom might only require one or two light fixtures, whereas a larger bathroom space might need several ceiling light fixtures. No matter what style of ceiling lighting you choose, it should fit the overall look of the bathroom and add to the ambiance.

Some examples of the ceiling lighting fixtures available for your bathroom would be recessed lighting fixtures, flush-mounted, semi-flush mounted, fixtures for chandeliers, monorail lighting or energy-efficient ceiling light fixtures. Thankfully, they come in styles that will accentuate and beautify just about any décor. Their styles can be anything from rustic, Tiffany, traditional, trendy and stylish, Victorian, very conventional, or tropical, to name a few. Installing a dimmer on your ceiling light fixtures might be a consideration since there are many tasks for which a bathroom is used. Shaving, brushing teeth, applying makeup, styling hair, reading, relaxing, and showering are simply a few of the things we do in our bathrooms. Each activity requires a different level of light. For relaxing in a bath, soft light would be welcomed. For shaving, flossing our teeth or for the times we need to clean the bathroom, a brighter level of light would be desired. Indirect lighting fixtures would be a welcome choice in a bathroom with a lot of counter space and a large, reflective floor space. The indirect light will help reduce the glare on the eyes and the visual fatigue that can develop when someone is constantly in direct lighting.

Just as in any other room of your home, an important consideration when choosing a ceiling light fixture is to determine how much light the fixture will diffuse or disperse into space. If the fixture is beautiful, but isn’t efficient, will absorb too much of the light, or won’t take light bulbs that will sufficiently light up your space, then you are wasting your money. Always search for those lighting choices that will maximize the efficiency of the light bulbs and highlight your unique bathroom décor. Last, but not least, don’t forget to consider color, finish and height from the floor when installing your bathroom ceiling light fixture. No one should have to bend over to avoid hitting a fixture with their head. Remember these simple guidelines, and you’ll have purposeful and attractive ceiling light fixtures complimenting your bathroom’s décor.

An Introduction to Store Fixtures

Everybody is familiar with the old retail chant, “Location, location, location!” It speaks volumes about making the right decisions from the start to make your retail establishment a success. Once you’ve decided what it is your store is offering to the general public, the next step you’ll take is finding the right location. Once you’ve found it, the next step is to decide how to dress up your establishment; you’ll need to decide what retail store fixtures will properly display your product. At this stage another invaluable cliché applies, “Presentation is everything!”

It’s true that how you present your products for sale is as important as the location, the timing of your venture and the pricing of your merchandise. On one hand, you wouldn’t display expensive wares in cheap, shoddy or dirty store display fixtures. An appearance that turns people off the minute they walk into your store isn’t going to help sales and, in fact, it will probably hurt them. On the other hand, you don’t want your display choices to completely overwhelm the merchandise. Dazzling displays that distract from the sales appeal of your merchandise won’t help business either.

In order to maximize your sales potential you need to decide what look and feel of the store will appeal to your target customer. Remember, no sale is complete until the customer leaves the store satisfied with his purchase, and a crucial part of that process is the way in which your products are displayed. There are many choices to make. It can be helpful to visit other stores selling similar merchandise even if your product is so unique that you have to travel to another city to find them. Even if you are selling an invention of your own that doesn’t exist anywhere else, it will still fall into a category of stores that you should investigate before setting up shop. Art stores have one look, plumbing supply stores another and clothing boutiques still another. Even if your investigation helps you decide which display perspectives don’t work for you, that knowledge can save you time and money in the long run.
