When electricity passes through mercury vapor in a glass tube, the invisible light given off interacts with the coating in the glass and produces visible light that is referred to as fluorescent light. All types of white light with good to very good color rendition are the hallmark of fluorescent lamps. These lamps are very energy efficient, and some models are also adaptable and can fit in any existing standard electrical socket. Older florescent lamps give off an eerie glow. This feature has, however, been improved upon, and the newer versions give off a flattering glow.

Despite their drawbacks, florescent lighting fixtures are becoming increasingly popular due to their energy-efficient feature. Increasing environmental awareness is one main reason for this preference.
